City of Whittier
Whittier California is a city full of rich, prominent history that dates back as early as the late 1700s, and wasn’t fully established as a recognized city until the early 1900s. Considered a business hub that is integral to California’s commerce, Whittier is located just twelve miles from the more famously known and eccentric city of Los Angeles.
Known to be one of the earliest settlements in California, Whittier was established in 1784 by Manuel Nieto. Retired from the Portola Expedition, he was granted land by the King of Spain. California was not yet a ratified state. With over 300,000 acres to build into what would be Whittier, it was divided into rancheros over time. Jacob Gerkens, a German immigrant, obtained the rights to the public land in 1868 by paying $234 to the United States Government under the Homestead Act.
By 1887 a small group of Quakers found interest in settling into the area, encouraging like-minded individuals to settle in and barter and sell as Farmers. Although the town was named in the inspiration of a Quaker named John Greenleaf Whittier, a poet, and famous newspaper editor. Whittier was credited for the name of the fledgling city. He never had the chance to visit Whittier City, but there was a poem dedicated in his honor.
As a charter law city, the government ratified Whittier in 1955. Although Whittier never took one step into the city named after him, he leaves behind his legacy in a poem to which the city was accredited his name, something that would be etched forever in time. It still holds historic value to this very day. The poem can be found on the city’s website.
